What is Modafinil?
Most people know Modafinil as a cognitive enhancing drug.
A so-called “smart drug,” one of a group of drugs called eugeroics, or wakefulness promoting agents. It was developed in France in the 1970s with the purpose of relieving the symptoms of narcolepsy.
It has also been used to treat ADHD and is reportedly used by the US and French military forces for helping troops to focus and remain calm during extreme and covert operations.
The original drug was actually Adrafinil, from which Modafinil is generated in the body. However, more usually nowadays that step is bypassed by making pills containing Modafinil, not adrafinil, so that conversion does not have to take place in the body. This is faster and places less stress on the liver.
What is Modafinil prescribed for?
Legitimately, Modafinil is only prescribed to patients who are seeking relief from sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and shift work sleep disorder, being approved for that purpose in countries such as Canada, the USA, UK, Australia Germany and other European countries.

What are the Modafinil brand names around the world?
Although all contain the same active ingredient, Modafinil, around the world the officially prescribed medication is known by a considerable number of different brand names:
Provigil (United States, United Kingdom, Italy, South Korea)
Modalert, Modvigil (India)
Modavigil (Australia, New Zealand)
Alertec or Vigicer (Canada)
Modiadal (Mexico, France, Sweden)
What are the differences between branded and generic Modafinil?
The only difference between branded Modafinil, such as the brand Provigil, and unbranded generic Modafinil, such as that produced in India is the price.
As long as you are getting the same amount of milligrams of Modafinil in the pill (usually 200mg), then the body will convert it in exactly the same way, and produce exactly the same effect. This of course only applies to a reputable manufacturer of generic Modafinil, and you should always be wary of an exceptionally cheap unbranded Modafinil supplier.
Some people maintain that branded Modafinil is superior, but when you look at the difference in price(sometimes literally hundreds of dollars), even if that was the case any small step up in quality is really not going to be worth the money. But generally, and studies back this up, generic Modafinil is usually equally as effective as the branded product.
Who makes generic Modafinil?
Most generic, unbranded Modafinil is made in India.
The largest pharmaceutical company in India making unbranded generic Modafinil is called SUN Pharma.
These Indian companies make their own branded product as well, the most famous of which is Modalert. So if you see generic Modafinil for sale, it is probably Indian and at the same standard as more established brand such as Provigil.
Is the Modafinil manufactured in India safe to use?
The answer to this question is yes it should be, as long as you know it’s been manufactured by one of the more reputable Indian pharmaceutical companies, such as SUN Pharma.
Modafinil has been manufactured generically in India for 20 years, and with the global patents running out in 2007 minimizing legal constraints, the proportion of global Modafinil manufactured in India has increased.
So there are a lot of companies in India making Modafinil, both generic and branded, and as long as it’s a recognized manufacturer and a reputable supplier, you should be getting a great quality product.
What is Modalert 200mg?
Modalert is a brand of Modafinil manufactured in India by the large pharmaceutical company SUN Pharma.
It is exactly the same Modafinil as they package the same pills in generic boxes for sale as well. 200mg is the amount of Modafinil included in each tablet.
What Is Waklert 150mg?
Waklertis also manufactured by SUN Pharma in India. However, there is an important distinction between Wakalert and the other product it mainly manufactures, Modalert, and also other brands and generic Modafinil available.
Wakalert contains Armodafinil, not Modafinil. This is an enantiopure drug, which means it only includes certain key chemical characteristics derived from Modafinil.
It is important to understand the distinction because it has a different dose, 150mg against the usual Modafinil 200mg. Some users report Waklert (Armodafinil) to be more “intense” than regular Modafinil.
Plus it’s vital to be aware that Armodafinil has a longer half-life in the body (about five hours longer) when compared to Modafinil, meaning that it will affect the consumer for longer. For a more in-depth comparison, you can check our article here.

What is the difference between Modafinil and arModafinil?
The difference between Modafinil and arModafinil is basically in the chemical structure.
Without getting too technical, Modafinil has a left and right sided chemical structure, consisting of two enantiomers, R-Modafinil and S-Modafinil.
This structure is in equal portions; however, scientists decided through research that R-Modafinil was more stable in pharmacological terms. They also found that it’s more active and longer lasting, giving it more targeted possibilities.
So a new chemical compound was created, a version of Modafinil using only the R-Modafinil (R-Enantiomer). ArModafinil derives its name from its chemical composition, R-Modafinil.
The main practical difference between the two versions of Modafinil is that arModafinil (commonly sold as Wakalert) has a longer half-life (up to 15 hours in total), meaning its total duration in the body can be several hours longer, making it potentially more potent and beneficial for through the day use.
However that is not the whole story, and the potential benefits and longer duration should not be construed as making it “better.” You can read a more in-depth article here.

How does Modafinil affect the brain?
To understand how Modafinil affects the brain, you have to just look at what it was designed to do. It was designed to keep people awake, alert, not wanting to sleep. That tells you everything you need to know on the general level.
Biologically, Modafinil targets the brain in a different way to stimulants such as amphetamines, which work by inhibiting the monoamine transporter. However, it’s now far more likely, although surprisingly still not 100% proven, that Modafinil mainly affects something called the DAT receptor.
The effect of this is to raise dopamine levels in the brain, by preventing re-uptake, basically a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, which has for some time been known to increase wakefulness and focus.
But that’s not the whole story as in clinical studies Modafinil was also found to decrease levels of GABA and simultaneously raise levels of glutamate, two actions which again can promote a more alert state of mind.
What are the off-label benefits of using Modafinil?
When we talk off-label benefits, we are mainly discussing how does Modafinil work as a nootropic, which is different to discussing how it works the people suffering from narcolepsy, the condition it is prescribed for.
Modafinil is a slow-release chemical binds to dopamine receptors, which prevents re-uptake, promoting alertness and giving people an increased ability to resist sleep, not to feel tired.
So the first benefit is you can do more for longer with a sharper focus. On top of that, Modafinil increases reaction times, commitment levels and gives people an ability to filter out informational noise so they can focus on one specific thing.
The misconception is that Modafinil will make you feel more euphoric, partly because people have used it on the party scene. That is to misunderstand why they are using it. It’s to promote wakefulness and alertness, to let them party for longer.
In terms of inducing positivity, Modafinil does it through a clearer mind, and a sharper focus, as well as through minimizing dopamine re-uptake, which increases pleasure and reward in the brain.
Is Modafinil similar to the NZT-48 drug from the movie Limitless?
Although on the surface the effects of Modafinil are spoken about in similar terms as the NZT-48 drug in the movie Limitless, the reality is not like the movies.
The bottom line is that no drug like NZT-48 exists that anyone knows about unless it’s being used secretly by the military. However, if that is the case, why is Modafinil the officially designated drug of choice for the US special forces, U.S. Air Force and French Foreign Legion?
Modafinil increases alertness, wakefulness, focus. It creates clarity, better decision-making, and better mood through its increasing of chemicals in the brain linked to pleasure and reward, which is brilliant for entrepreneurs, students, and professionals.
So in real life terms, yes, Modafinil is as close as you are safely going to get to NZT-48, but don’t take it thinking you are going to have the same sort of capacity and experience. Nor does it have the same addictive, damaging and detrimental effects as the drug in the film either.
Does Modafinil really make people smarter?
The short answer is no. Modafinil does not make people smarter.
Modafinil improves wakefulness. It keeps people more alert, focus, and, above all, motivated.
But none of those things will make you smarter. You will work better if you are focused on something, but you will not automatically achieve it to a better standard, learn better, or retain for information.
Plenty of people take Modafinil and find that although they are hyperfocused, their productivity is no greater if they start focusing on the wrong things, or parts of tasks. However, others claim that it does improve memory learning and decision-making.
One significant study concluded that when it comes to lateral thinking, thinking outside the box, taking a judgment call, Modafinil actually decreases this ability. So Modafinil might be great for task completion and focus, but it could, in fact, stifle natural creativity.
So Modafinil is not a wonder drug that will automatically make you more intelligent, or automatically make you able to retain and process more information. Modafinil will motivate you and focus you, but it has no capacity to generate intelligence.
Does Modafinil help with motivation?
Motivation is the ability to perform tasks in the face of physical or mental barriers and negative perception. So if you have to do some work, and you really don’t want to, it’s motivation which helps you to complete that task, without motivation you just wouldn’t do it.
Through user anecdotes and scientific studies, Modafinil is undoubtedly widely linked to an increase in motivation. This is because Modafinil creates focus which lessens the perceived barriers to a task. On top of that, the increase in dopamine levels through it being a re-uptake inhibitor mean that more pleasure is derived from usually un-pleasurable duties, merely meaning people feel more awarded doing things they wouldn’t typically enjoy.
This perception that Modafinil increases motivation has been confirmed as accurate in several studies, one of which concluded:
“These data support the hypothesis that Modafinil increases motivation. Moreover, given the similarity of effects with GBR12909, the data corroborate evidence that the behavioral effects of Modafinil might be due to DAT (dopamine) inhibition.”
Can Modafinil help with weight loss?
There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that Modafinil can help with weight loss. There are several reasons why this is the case:
Modafinil causes a spike in dopamine levels, which is the brains reward chemical. It is thought that this satisfying of reward makes people less interested in eating.
The task focus that Modafinil can give an individual means that they just forget to eat, or take less time consuming food because they are focused elsewhere.
Because Modafinil promotes alertness and motivation, your body is more stimulated and can be on the move more frequently than you think. Especially in people with a high muscle mass, calories can simply be burned faster. Likewise, because when the brain is more active, it uses more calories.
One common side effects of taking Modafinil are some level of nausea. If you feel uneasy, then you are less likely to want to eat.
Why is Modafinil better than Adderall/Ritalin?
The first reason why Modafinil could be better than Adderall/Ritalin is due to it having a lower risk of dependency.
In the USA, Adderall is a Schedule II drug, meaning it has a high risk of dependency. Modafinil is a Schedule IV drug, which means it has a much lower risk of addiction. This is because Modafinil affects dopamine levels in a different way, which is less aggressive and addictive.
Modafinil is also potentially better than Adderall because although the side-effects are similar, again, they are usually less aggressive using Modafinil. On top of that, the more significant side-effects are far more likely to appear if you use Adderall.
Concerning the positive effects on the brain, Adderall is specifically an ADHD drug, which has a positive impact on focus, but not in the same way as Modafinil, which from available evidence has a higher capacity to allow people to focus and learn in a positive and controlled fashion.
A review of 24 studies concluded that:“We found that while most studies employing basic testing paradigms show that Modafinil intake enhances executive function, only half show improvements in attention and learning and memory, and a few even report impairments in divergent creative thinking. In contrast, when more complex assessments are used, Modafinil appears to consistently engender enhancement of attention, executive functions, and learning.”
You learn more about the benefits of Modafinil Vs Adderall here.
Is Modafinil addictive?
The answer to the question does Modafinil cause addiction is yes, no and maybe. However, the chances of addiction are much lower than in other comparable drugs used as nootropics.
The reason that you could get addicted to Modafinil is that it increases the release and minimizes the re-uptake of dopamine in the brain, the same as similar drugs like Adderall. But Modafinil doesn’t do this aggressively, which means that the body doesn’t get the same “hit” which can become addictive.
Conversely, taking Modafinil too often can deplete dopamine levels, leading to the brain craving Modafinil because it prevents re-uptake.
The other way you could get addicted is if you get addicted to the feeling of being on Modafinil. Although it is not a euphoric drug, you won’t get high, the enhanced cognitive benefits and the potential upswing in mood can become something that is desired all the time in people, especially in those who are addiction prone.
So generally, Modafinil is low on the scale concerning the potential for addiction. As this study concludes, describing Modafinil addiction as “rare”, but if you have ever had problems with addiction, then you should tread carefully when using Modafinil.

Modafinil F.A.Q. | Taking it for the first time
How much Modafinil should I take the first time?
As with most medicines that you are not taking under the guidance of a doctor, it’s always best to start with a conservative dose and work up to what works for you, basically feel your way up to the level you want bit by bit.
Some people start with as low as 50 mg, others take one-quarter of a 200mg Modafinil tablets, others take half, and some chuck a whole tablet in the mouth at once.
Although all of these are perfectly legitimate options, and most people will be absolutely fine with 200mg, just remember that it’s perfectly possible to take half a pill, and then a couple of hours later take the other half.
In terms of the consensus, there isn’t one. But you will see a lot of people recommending half a pill, 100mg, as a great starting point for your Modafinil experiment.
What to expect the first time I take Modafinil?
The first thing you really need to be aware of is that strong effects can last eight hours or longer. If you are taking arModafinil (Waklert), then it can be a 10 hours or more. So you have to understand that you going to be under some level of effect, depending on the dose you take, for quite a length of time.
What you can expect is to be awake. So if you take Modafinil in the afternoon, don’t expect to get much sleep that night. That’s why a lot of people take it first thing in the morning, even getting up as early as 5 AM to take it so that they get the benefits through the day, but with the effects wearing off by late evening.
What you should expect is to not actually feel hugely different in some ways. A lot of people think Modafinil isn’t working for them; then they look up three hours later after finishing their study and realize that they’ve been completely and ruthlessly focused without even realizing it.
So understanding that Modafinil might give you hyperfocus that will make you forget about other things going on is important to understand as well. This hyperfocus can be on something unproductive unless you channel it, which is why it is also advised that people taking the first time making a list of things they want to achieve.
What should I consider when taking Modafinil?
The first thing to consider is how long the effects will last. Tied into that is considering when you want the effects to benefit you. Is actually no point in taking Modafinil at 9 AM if you’re not going to be working, going out, doing whatever you want it for, until the evening.
The second thing to consider is that the half-life of Modafinil is quite long, around 10 hours, and the half-life of arModafinil is even longer at up to 15 hours. So you need to consider that you are going to be alert and wide-awake for two 15 hours after taking it, which is obviously no good if you want a good nights sleep.
Something a lot of new users also forget is to make sure you drink plenty of water. Modafinil can dehydrate you, and if you don’t drink enough water the next day your head can hurt so much that it undoes all the previous days’ productivity. So when you take Modafinil you should consider having plenty of water, and reminders to drink, around you.
HYDRATION TIP: set an alarm on your phone/laptop at regular intervals and place a large glass/bottle of water in from on you. This will remind you to keep hydrated even when you’re hyperfocused on the task at hand!
And finally, plan your productivity. It’s no good chucking Modafinil down your throat and then drifting around trying to find something to focus on. Plan your day, plan your productivity, and always plan to achieve more than you think you can.
Can you overdose from Modafinil?
As with any medicine or chemical, it is, of course, possible to overdose. But what’s important are the severity of the short and long-term effects of an overdose.
In terms of Modafinil, various studies have administered well over 1000 mg, and up to 1600 mg in some cases, to determine the effects. Doing this for up to 21 days, it was found that no test subjects suffered life-threatening results. In fact, taking this a step further, individuals have received up to 4000mg per day in clinical study and still not suffered life-threatening signs:
“In clinical trials, a total of 151 protocol-specified doses ranging from 1000 to 1600 mg/day (5 to 8 times the recommended daily dose of PROVIGIL) have been administered to 32 subjects, including 13 subjects who received doses of 1000 or 1200 mg/day for 7 to 21 consecutive days. In addition, several intentional acute overdoses occurred; the two largest being 4500 mg and 4000 mg taken by two subjects participating in different depression studies. None of these study subjects experienced any unexpected or life-threatening effects.”
How many milligrams of Modafinil can I take in one day?
A lot of how many milligrams of Modafinil you can take in one day will come down to the effect it has on you personally. Some people are more responsive to the effects of Modafinil than others, and in a tiny proportion of people with a specific gene structure, it has little or no effect at all.
But generally, a low dose is considered to be 100 mg or less, an average dose around 200 mg, and a high-dose 300 mg and above.
In clinical studies, some people have routinely taken 1000 mg of Modafinil over multiple days and been absolutely fine. However, most people anecdotally on sites like Reddit suggest that anything above 600-800mg is unusual and not recommended.
For many people, the dose of Modafinil they can take is more about how long they want the effects to last for, and how intense they want the effects to be.
So for example, if you want to have a highly productive day, then taking around 200 mg early in the morning, so that it wears off by late evening is typical.

How long does it take for Modafinil to kick in?
How long it takes for Modafinil to kick in will depend on the person taking it, as we all absorb and react to chemical substances differently.
But generally, Modafinil will start to kick in at around the 45-minute mark. Sometimes quicker, and in some users, it could take an hour longer.
One thing that will affect the time it takes for Modafinil to kick in with the user is whether they have eaten or not. It’s recommended to take Modafinil on an empty stomach so that its effects can be felt more quickly, and typically this will happen in around 30-45 minutes.
What is the “sublingual” method?
Many users report experiencing faster and more “intense” effects by taking Modafinil sublingually.
Basically, instead of ingesting the pill you chew it and let it dissolve under your tongue for a few minutes. You will be able to experience the effects within a few minutes (compared to at least half an hour/45 minutes via ingestion).
The reason why it seems to be more effective is that when ingested, the drug has to bypass the digestive system before being absorbed. By taking it sublingually, Modafinil enters the bloodstream directly without interacting with the digesting liquids in charge of breaking down food/nutrients.
The downside? The pills will feel extremely bitter and many people cannot tolerate the awful taste.
If you decide to go the sublingual route, please remember to start with smaller doses (50/100mg) as the more efficient delivery method will allow for a small tab to be as effective as a whole pill.
When does Modafinil reach it peak effects?
As with everything chemical going into your body, different durations and effects will be different depending on the individual’s reaction, metabolism, state of mind, what they have eaten, and of course the quality of the Modafinil they have taken.
But generally, good quality Modafinil at around 200 mg will kick in at around 30-45 minutes, with peak effects appearing within the first two hours and then being sustained for about three hours. The effects will remain in place at a gradually decreasing level for as long as 10-12 hours, which is the approximate half-life of Modafinil.
So there is no specific answer, but generally, peak effects are felt within around two hours, last about three hours, and then the tail off can last up to 15 hours.
How long do the effects of Modafinil last?
The half-life of Modafinil is around 10-12 hours, which means that the significant effects of it will have worn off around that time.
The stronger effects of Modafinil in most cases are felt between hours 2 and 6, gently tailing off after that.
If you are looking to take Modafinil, you should understand that the effects of it can last for basically an entire day.
When shall I take Modafinil if I want to sleep later?
The half-life of Modafinil is around 10-12 hours. If you take a typical dose of 200 mg at six/seven in the morning, then you should be pretty much free of the effects by late evening, allowing you to sleep relatively normally that night.
Obviously, this will depend on you as an individual, and your experimenting with personal circumstances, but a lot of people who take Modafinil to have a productive day without making the following day unproductive take it very early in the morning. This is an important consideration because a lack of sleep will start to snowball, progressively counteracting the focus Modafinil can bring.

What are the most common side effects of Modafinil?
Modafinil is surprisingly relatively free of side-effects, even at high doses. It is one of the better “smart drugs “out there in terms of not producing excessive adverse side-effects.
The most common side effects are minor nausea, headaches, anxiety, thirst, raise blood pressure and nervousness.
Less common side effects of Modafinil include shortness of breath, dizziness or fainting, blurred vision, chest pain, heart palpitations, trembling, confusion.
But generally, Modafinil is a well-tolerated substance in the vast majority of cases, with the benefits far outweighing any negative side-effects in the short term.
There is also no evidence at present suggesting that sustained Modafinil use has long-term effects, beyond the small potential for dependency. However, there has been little opportunity to study long-term benefits as it’s only been in the past 20 years that studies and awareness have grown, so in terms of long-term side effects it is best to make sure that your Modafinil usage is moderate.
Why does Modafinil not have any effect on me?
There could be a couple of reasons why Modafinil is not having an effect on you. The first is around dosage and quality. If the dose is too low for you personally, or it’s low because you have bought poor quality Modafinil pills, then you will feel little to no effect.
The other reason is that about 20% of the population carries a gene which is resistant to the effects of Modafinil, various genes within the SNP rs4680 group. The level of resistance varies, from very little to almost total, so you could be one of the unlucky ones who has an almost complete resistance to the effects of Modafinil.
If Modafinil is not having any effect, experiment with higher doses within safe levels, look at when and how you are taking it, and also check that your expectations for the effects and benefits while on Modafinil are not ridiculously high. You are not going to become a super-motivated genius in an amazing new pleasurable world just because you’re taking Modafinil.
When should I see a doctor after taking Modafinil?
Modafinil is usually well tolerated, but if you start to suffer significant shortness of breath, dizziness heart palpitations, blacking out, or other symptoms that could point to respiratory or heart problems that could be serious, then you should obviously make contact with a medical professional immediately.
Modafinil can also in rare cases cause a severe rash. It can also cause what is known as a “fixed drug eruption,” which is where the same patch of skin reacts negatively each time the drug is taken. Again, this is a situation where you should stop taking Modafinil and seek medical advice.
You should also see a doctor if you suspect you have the symptoms of something very rare called Stevens-Johnson syndrome. This is a rare and serious skin disorder that can allegedly be triggered by using Modafinil (Provigil), although this link has been challenged. Although it is a very rare disorder, which may have nothing to do with Modafinil use, any skin rash, integrity problems or significant skin irritation should not be ignored.
What can I do to improve the effects of Modafinil?
When it comes to improving the effects of Modafinil, the first important point to make is that sometimes less is more. If you are hammering 300mg every day, you will quickly lose sleep, and you will find your productivity crashes.
It’s far better to take 50 or 100mg, giving you a slight edge every single day, but allowing you to sleep, so that you feel the benefits without detrimental effects.
Generally, to improve the effects of Modafinil, the following are great ideas:
Drink plenty of water
Don’t take more than the bare minimum dose needed
Plan what you want to do before you take Modafinil
Have regular breaks of several days
In terms of both improving and extending the effects of Modafinil, supplements can be helpful. Some people actually up caffeine intake(be careful with that as It might cause some mild tachycardia), while other people take things like fish oil, vitamins or drink green tea.
Putting this all together, alongside good quality Modafinil, and you will feel mild stimulation that allows you to increase your productivity dramatically over the course of the day, with far less a chance of tolerance or exhaustion lessening the duration and effects.
How often should I take Modafinil?
Although some people take Modafinil every day with no ill effects, most people need to manage their usage to avoid the unpalatable situation of feeling exhausted and losing the productivity they want to gain and also building up an increasing tolerance to Modafinil.
To minimize your tolerance, you should have more days free of Modafinil per week than you do taking it. Some people will have a break of a week, or even longer.
On top of that, your dose should be the bare minimum you need to achieve what you want to achieve. Getting used to a high dose will increase your chances of tolerance.
So it’s a combination of managing your dosage and frequency to ensure that you get the maximum possible benefits, but without ruining those benefits through exhaustion or tolerance.
Can Modafinil affect my sex life?
Whether you are male or female, yes Modafinil will affect your sex life. How it will affect your sex life is completely unpredictable though, and depend very much on you as an individual.
Generally, for men, it is a suppressant sexually. This means men typically have more trouble getting aroused, and on high doses cannot get aroused at all.
However, that’s not the whole story. If a man can get aroused then duration can extend significantly, leading to an extended experience. When you add into that the focus that Modafinil gives you, and many men report a longer and more intense pleasure.
Concerning females, Modafinil seems to react differently than in men, rather than being suppressant, there are more anecdotal examples of women becoming hypersexual.
However, again that’s not the whole story, as studies suggest some men can become hyper-sexualized on Modafinil as well, to the point of it becoming their entire life went on Modafinil.
Anecdotally when you look at the relevant groups on Reddit, you see evidence that although Modafinil can suppress sexual desire men, the hyperfocus can have the opposite effect if arousal is triggered. For example, we have this comment from a Reddit user:
“DON’T watch porn while taking Modafinil. Maybe you have more then I do, but if I don’t have my work spread out in front of me, and turn to porn while on moda, well… there goes my day, and I need an ice pack later! -=).”
Some people experience the bizarre situation where physically they can’t get aroused, but mentally they are hyper-sexualized, literally obsessed with sex during a Modafinil experience, due to their state of mind or predilection, mixed with the hyperfocus and higher levels of pleasure and reward chemicals that Modafinil maintains.
Can you get high on Modafinil?
Although Modafinil can give you a lighter mood and minor euphoria at higher doses, it will not get you high. It is a stimulant, but not in the same way as amphetamines, or something like Adderall/Ritalin.
The other problem is that to achieve any euphoria, you have to take a high-dose, and the higher the dose, the more that anxiety can take over, which will more than offset any positive mood, as this Reddit user who took an incredibly high dose (recommended is 2-300mg daily) reported:“Well, I’m about 2.5 hrs into 2g’s (2,000 mg) and its been moderately to minorly euphoric, but now it’s getting a little panicky feeling.”
Why am I getting a severe headache from Modafinil?
Some people might get a strong headache under the effects of Modafinil, but this is quite rare. However, a significant amount of people do get a shocking headache the day after taking Modafinil.
The major reason for this is usually dehydration. People underestimate how dehydrating Modafinil is. Because they are focused on tasks, they can often also forget to drink regularly, which exacerbates the problem.
If you are experiencing headaches during or after taking Modafinil, the first thing to do is to make sure you are increasing the amount of water you drink.
If increasing water intake does not help with preventing headaches, try avoiding caffeinated drinks on the days when you are taking Modafinil. This includes coffee, teas, soft drinks and energy drinks.
Can I drink alcohol or consume other drugs when taking Modafinil?
Without getting too deep into the science, it’s not a great idea to mix alcohol with Modafinil.
The reason for this is basically that the two trigger the same neurotransmitters, GABA, and glutamate, but with the opposite effect.
This creates a situation where people don’t get as much benefit from taking the Modafinil, and on top of that effects of alcohol consumption are amplified. It’s very common for people to have a significantly lower tolerance of alcohol when taking Modafinil, which can be very dangerous.
On top of that, both Modafinil and alcohol can dehydrate you significantly. So being unbalanced and dehydrated can create a situation where people can feel and appear pretty crazy if they are pushing it with both alcohol and Modafinil.
In terms of drugs, some people take Modafinil to increase their ability to party for longer, because it can keep you focused while maintaining high levels of pleasure and reward chemicals in the brain.
However, this combination can be dangerous if mismanaged, due to the potential for dehydration, and to push the bodies much too much. The heart, particularly during a recreational drug experience, is put under increased pressure, and if you take Modafinil to push yourself even further, you increase the risk of problems.
Why does my urine smell so bad when taking Modafinil?
When Modafinil metabolizes in the body, it produces sulfone. This is expelled through urine which can give it a very strong smell of sulfur.
This is a completely normal smell and is actually a good sign. The fact that your urine smells of sulfur means that the Modafinil pill contains the active ingredient and isn’t a dud. Finally, do take into consideration that the urine smell depends on a person’s metabolism and some people might not get that urine smell even when taking legit Modafinil.

Will Modafinil show up in a drug test?
Any drug will show up in a drug test if that drug test is looking for it. A drug test is usually a standard panel kit consisting of a number of different panels (usually between four and 20) which react to different drug metabolites.
However, no standard panel drug test kit contains a panel to check for Modafinil metabolites.
One of the few exceptions to this is athletics. The International Olympic Committee(IOC) has banned Modafinil and does test for it globally.
That’s not to say that a panel drug test outside of specialist roles doesn’t exist, but in terms of employment or education, nobody is checking to see if you are taking Modafinil.
Can I take it as a pre-workout supplement?
Regarding using Modafinil as a pre-workout supplement, it’s not recommended every single time, and never if you don’t understand the potential problems. Although Modafinil can improve focus and energy levels, it also can potentially mean you push yourself further than you should during a training session.
On top of this, Modafinil also dehydrates people. Because you are so focused on exercising, and getting dehydrated more rapidly, it can be damaging to do an intense workout using Modafinil.
However, there is no doubt that it is a performance enhancer, which is why the International Olympics committee bans Modafinil considering it a doping agent. So if you are happy you can maintain hydration, and know when to quit, then it can most certainly improve the quality of your workout session.
How can I avoid building up a tolerance to Modafinil?
The actions by which tolerance to Modafinil can build up are unclear at this moment in time. However, individuals and research generally suggest tolerance can occur.
However, anecdotally, the common sense around how Modafinil works in the brain has led to the following being the most common ways to avoid building up a tolerance:
Space out your days on Modafinil. It is recommended to have at least more days not taking Modafinil as taking it. However, that may still be too often for a lot of people, depending on the size of the dose ingested. Some people would be better off having 3-5 days between doses, and if you feel that you “need” Modafinil, or that the effects are lessening, spacing out doses with breaks of up to 10 days is wise.
The recommended maximum daily dose of Modafinil is 200mg. When people find effects diminishing, the natural reaction is to pump up the dose. However, many users on Reddit are finding that lowering the dose actually works better. This could be linked to dopamine levels recovering and is indeed worth trying.
Cycle between different drugs. Although this is not proven scientifically, many people report that cycling between Modafinil and arModafinil has a positive effect on minimizing tolerance.
It’s also important to note that tolerance to Modafinil may partly just be in the mind as you get used to being under the effects of it. Indeed, several major respected studies (https://www.jad-journal.com/article/S0165-0327(06)00011-5/fulltext) have concluded that tolerance build-up in Modafinil is insignificant.

Is it legal to possess Modafinil without a prescription?
The legality of Modafinil around buying it, prescribing it and taking it is different depending on where you are in the world. However to give three specific examples:
- In the USA, you must have a doctors prescription to legally buy it, use it, or have it in your possession.
- In the UK you again have to have a doctors prescription to possess, use or buy Modafinil legally.
- In India, it is not regulated, and you can buy it and possess it without a prescription. However there is a slightly gray area around this, as although it is not listed on India’s “Schedule H” controlled substance list, its composition means that it is technically still covered by regulations of Schedule H, so it is a gray area.
There is a difference though between the official legality of Modafinil, and the legal reality of owning and using it. In all three of the countries highlighted above, there have been no documented cases of people being found with unprescribed Modafinil, or having unprescribed Modafinil stopped at the customs border, being prosecuted. So although in many countries it is legally regulated, in reality, it is actually used and distributed with virtually no legal threat to the individual. Once again, this is not legal advice and you should always check your country’s law before making a purchase.
Can I get Modafinil without a prescription?
You can get hold of anything if you want it enough, and Modafinil is certainly no different. In some countries like India, it’s not a problem, because Modafinil is sold over-the-counter and doesn’t require a prescription anyway.
In other countries and regions such as the USA, UK, Canada, EU, and Australasia, it’s pretty easy to import Modafinil without a prescription, usually from reputable Indian Modafinil sellers.
The chances of the package being investigated and confiscated by customs are small, and even if it is found, they will only ask you to produce a valid doctor’s prescription in order to receive the package. If you don’t have a prescription, the Modafinil shipment is destroyed, but no further action appears to have ever been taken against an individual importing small quantities.
So generally, you can obtain Modafinil without a prescription, and it is pretty safe to import smaller quantities that are obviously for personal use.
